Cleaning the Video Heads
Introduction
Digital video camcorders record video signals on the tape in very thin lines (as thin as 1/8 of the width of a hair). The following symptoms may appear if the video heads become dirty even a little. · Sound becomes distorted, or there is no sound during playback. [. . . ] · Operating the zoom or the joystick ( ) will return the camcorder to manual focus adjustment. Push the joystick ( ) towards [BACK] to save the focus adjustment.

White Balance
The white balance function helps you accurately reproduce colors under different lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recordings. POINTS TO CHECK ( Mode switch: 8)

Point the camcorder at a white object, zoom in until it fills the whole screen and press ( ). The camcorder retains the custom setting even if you turn off the camcorder. NOTES

Settings are automatically set by the camcorder. For recording under tungsten and tungsten type (3-wavelength) fluorescent lighting. [ SET] Use the custom white balance for special situations not covered by the other options. The custom white balance will ensure that white subjects appear white under various lighting conditions. When you select the custom white balance [ SET]: - Make the white balance adjustment in a place with sufficient light. - Very rarely and depending on the light source, may keep on flashing instead of staying on. Even in that case, the white balance would be properly adjusted and the results should be better than with [ AUTO]. Custom white balance may provide better results in the following cases: - Changing lighting conditions - Close-ups - Subjects in a single color (sky, sea or forest) - Under mercury lamps and certain types of fluorescent lights

The camcorder automatically reduces the background sound of wind, but you can turn the wind screen off when you want the microphone to be as sensitive as possible ( 39).

Selecting the Size and Quality of Still Images
Still images are recorded on the memory card using the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) compression. [. . . ] Remove the cassette immediately and leave the cassette compartment open. A cassette cannot be loaded when condensation is detected.
